Jordan Denounces Israeli Death Penalty Law for Palestinian Prisoners

(MENAFN) Jordan formally condemned on Monday a newly enacted Israeli law permitting capital punishment for Palestinian prisoners, declaring the legislation a breach of international law and international humanitarian law.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ambassador Fouad Majali made clear that Amman categorically rejects the measure, denouncing it as a "racist, discriminatory and illegitimate" law.

Majali stressed that the legislation contravenes established international legal principles, which explicitly prohibit an occupying power from imposing its authority over occupied territory through unilateral legislative action.

The spokesman further characterized the law as one component of a broader, systematic Israeli policy aimed at undermining the Palestinian people and stripping them of their inalienable rights — including the right to self-determination and the pursuit of an independent Palestinian state within the framework of a two-state solution on Palestinian territory.

Majali issued a direct appeal to the international community, urging immediate intervention to prevent Israel from enforcing the law and to halt what he described as illegal Israeli legislation and unilateral measures targeting the Palestinian people and their presence on their land.

The condemnation came hours after Israel's Knesset passed the legislation on Monday, approving it in its second and third readings by a vote of 62 to 48, according to Israeli media reports. The law empowers Israeli courts to hand down death sentences against Palestinian prisoners. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cast his vote in support of the measure.
