Egypt Urges Dialogue to End US-Iran Tensions—Foreign Minister

(MENAFN) Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty called on Sunday for dialogue as the key approach to resolving the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. This call came during a phone conversation with US envoy Steve Witkoff, in which both officials discussed the latest developments surrounding the US-Iran negotiations hosted by Pakistan.

According to a statement from Egypt's Foreign Ministry, Abdelatty was briefed by Witkoff on Washington's position in the talks. The two officials emphasized the importance of ongoing coordination and consultation between Egypt and the United States on this critical issue.

Witkoff commended Egypt’s role in supporting security and stability across the Middle East, while Abdelatty reiterated the necessity of adhering to diplomacy and dialogue. He stressed the need to pursue peaceful solutions that could lead to a comprehensive agreement on all unresolved issues to safeguard regional security and stability.

The call for dialogue comes amid escalating tensions, with over 3,000 people killed in US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran since February 28. In response, Tehran launched retaliatory strikes on Israel, Iraq, Jordan, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets. A two-week ceasefire was brokered earlier this week, but the Iranian and US delegations, having concluded 21 hours of talks in Islamabad early Sunday, were unable to reach an agreement.
