Rouhani Urges Radical Political Changes as War Threatens Iran

(MENAFN) Former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday emphasized the need for immediate and comprehensive political reforms, arguing that such steps are essential to protect both the nation and its governing system during the ongoing war, as stated by reports.

According to reports, Rouhani called on the Supreme National Security Council to examine multiple possible outcomes, including both the continuation and cessation of the conflict, and to reach a decision grounded in legal procedures. He indicated that this approach would be necessary to counter what he described as hostile strategies.

“Protecting the country and the system requires urgent and fundamental political reforms,” he said.

Rouhani cautioned that the government’s primary remaining strength lies in public backing, noting that citizens have accumulated significant complaints and expectations that must be addressed. He highlighted the importance of learning from past negotiations with the United States.

He further claimed that efforts by adversaries to transfer uranium out of Iran and assert control over certain islands aimed at influencing the Strait of Hormuz revealed their underlying objectives.

Since Feb. 28, the United States and Israel have continued an aerial campaign against Iran, resulting in the deaths of more than 1,340 individuals, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In response, Iran has launched drones and missiles targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military bases. These attacks have caused casualties, inflicted damage on infrastructure, and contributed to disruptions in global markets and aviation.
