Macron Emphasizes Protection of Civilians, Lebanon’s Territorial Integrity

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday highlighted the urgent need to safeguard Lebanon’s territorial integrity and protect civilians as regional hostilities continue, according to reports.

“The territorial integrity of Lebanon, the protection of civilians, regardless of their religious affiliation, and the preservation of state institutions and the country's infrastructure are essential,” Macron said in a statement on the US social media platform X, following a phone call with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.

Macron emphasized that France has conveyed its full support to Lebanon during what he described as a “crucial moment” for the country’s future. He noted that the Lebanese government has taken “strong and courageous steps” to assert its sovereignty since the escalation involving Hezbollah began.

The French leader also pledged continued humanitarian assistance to displaced civilians and support for Lebanon’s armed and security forces, including the planned delivery of armored personnel carriers in the coming days.

The remarks come as Israel has carried out airstrikes and launched a ground offensive in southern Lebanon following a cross-border attack by Hezbollah on March 2, according to reports.

The ongoing escalation follows a US-Israeli offensive against Iran that began on Feb. 28, resulting in over 1,340 deaths. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as US military assets in Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries, causing casualties, damage to infrastructure, and disruptions to regional security.
