Iran Fortifies Kharg Island Amid Potential US Military Action
Sources indicated that Tehran has deployed additional mobile missile systems and laid both anti-personnel and anti-armor mines along the island’s coastline in recent weeks.
"Iran has also been laying traps including anti-personnel and anti-armor mines around the island," sources said.
Kharg Island handles nearly 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports, making it strategically vital. Reports suggest that US plans to potentially seize the island could be aimed at pressuring Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Retired Admiral James Stavridis, a military analyst, cautioned about the high risks of a ground assault, noting that Iranian forces are “clever and ruthless” and would seek to inflict maximum casualties on American troops.
Meanwhile, Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that any attempt to occupy Iranian territory would trigger retaliatory strikes against the infrastructure of countries supporting such actions.
Kharg Island is located approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) off Iran’s coast in the Persian Gulf and serves as the center of the nation’s oil exports.
The heightened defenses come amid a broader US-Israeli air campaign against Iran that began on Feb. 28, reportedly killing more than 1,340 people, including the then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In response, Iran has carried out drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as locations in Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets, resulting in casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to global markets and aviation.
